Innovation, Sustainability, and the Future of University Culture: Lessons from India
by Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma, BDS, MDS, MBA

Abstract
As higher education institutions navigate an era defined by climate urgency,
technological disruption, and global interdependence, universities are being reimagined as living ecosystems where innovation and sustainability coalesce. The moral and intellectual purpose of academia today extends beyond knowledge creation to knowledge stewardship—cultivating solutions that serve humanity and the planet.
India’s higher education reforms, led by the National Education Policy (2020) and
aligned with Viksit Bharat@2047 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, provide
an exemplary framework for this transformation.
This lecture examines the evolving culture of innovation and sustainability in Indian
universities through the lens of institutional practice at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha
University (GGSIPU), New Delhi. It highlights how GGSIPU integrates sustainability into
innovation ecosystems. Drawing from both global frameworks and local experience, the
lecture explores how innovation-led governance, green campus initiatives, and social
entrepreneurship create measurable academic and societal impact.
By bridging policy, practice, and philosophy, the lecture redefines the future of university
culture as one rooted in empathy, equity, and ecological consciousness. It underscores
that universities of the future will not only produce innovators—they will nurture humane
innovators who sustain progress with purpose.
