Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Teledentistry for Orally Frail Patients
Abstract
The uneven distribution of dental professionals, particularly across rural and specialised settings, remains a persistent challenge in many countries and substantially restricts access to oral healthcare for vulnerable populations. To address this gap, we established an integrated teledentistry network based on digital connectivity and intraoral cameras.
The approach was first implemented in correctional facilities, where local health volunteers were trained to perform remote clinical screenings; this initiative achieved complete screening coverage across 12 pilot prisons, examined 16,228 inmates, and enabled treatment for 4,211 individuals. Building on this foundation, the framework has since progressed beyond simple image transmission to incorporate multimodal artificial intelligence for more comprehensive and precise telecare.
In a subsequent pilot study, the system was used to identify oral mucosal lesions and detect early enamel caries from intraoral photographs, achieving an acceptable level of pre-diagnostic accuracy. By integrating sustainable social innovation with multimodal AI, the project advances Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by offering a scalable model to reduce geographic barriers to care and foster self-reliant communities.
