Applications of digital approaches to improve patient-centered implant treatment planning
Abstract
Dental implants have become the treatment of choice for replacing missing teeth in edentulous and partially edentulous patients. Digital approaches — including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), clinical pocket measurements and artificial-intelligence–assisted review of medical and medication histories — allow a more accurate assessment of bone quantity and quality, periodontal status and systemic risk, and thereby improve clinical outcomes.
This presentation reviews the current standards of care for dental implant treatment planning and surgery, and illustrates how these digital tools can be combined into a prosthetically driven, patient-centered workflow.

Biography
Dr. Jon B. Suzuki is Professor Emeritus of Microbiology and Immunology (School of Medicine) and Professor Emeritus of Periodontology and Oral Implantology (School of Dentistry) at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA, where he served as Chairman and Director of Graduate Periodontology and Oral Implantology, and as Associate Dean for Graduate Education.
At the University of Pittsburgh, USA, he served as Dean, Chief of Hospital Dentistry, and Chief Executive Officer of the Faculty Practice Plan.
He currently holds Clinical Professorships at the University of Maryland, the University of Washington and Nova Southeastern University, and is a member of the faculty at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD (US Navy).
