The prognostic role of anaemia in maxillofacial space infections
Abstract
Maxillofacial space infections (MSIs) present a spectrum of clinical severity, yet the systemic impact of anaemia on these infections remains underexplored. This presentation details a prospective clinical cohort study of 181 patients, investigating pre-operative anaemia as a risk factor for MSI severity and progression. Our findings demonstrate that lower haemoglobin levels are strongly associated with elevated inflammatory markers, specifically the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and C-reactive protein (CRP), as well as prolonged hospital stays and increased symptom severity.
Notably, a haemoglobin threshold of approximately 10g/dL was identified, below which clinical outcomes significantly worsen, reflecting a graded escalation in disease severity rather than a simple diagnostic cut-off. Furthermore, the study highlights the superiority of NLR and CRP over total leukocyte count as robust prognostic markers for risk stratification in anaemic patients.

Dr. Eshwar Thota is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at SVS Institute of Dental Sciences, Mahabubnagar, Telangana and Āsya Clinics, Hyderabad, Telangana, India, with extensive clinical and research expertise in the field. He holds an MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the SVS Institute of Medical Sciences. Throughout his career, Dr Thota has contributed significantly to dental and maxillofacial research, authoring numerous papers in indexed journals.
A highly decorated academic, he has received multiple national awards for his papers and poster presentations.
